    Adaptation and testing of an instrument to measure energy literacy in Mexico

    We live in a continuous dependence to energy, and yet, there does not exist a clear sight about what we know and what we ignore about energy. Energy literacy is a broad term encompassing content knowledge as well as a citizenship understanding of energy that includes affective and behavioral aspects. In this study, of quantitative nature with exploratory scope, the purpose was to create an adaptation, and application of a pilot test, of the questionnaire “Energy Literacy Survey” (DeWaters y Powers, 2009) in a sample of university students from Mexico. The method included a translation procedure, the regional adaptation and the development of the pilot test. The sample consisted in a total of 114 participants. The questionnaire was made of 64 items in three sub-scales (cognitive, affective and behavioral). Being an adaptation from an original instrument, reliability and relevance of the items were evaluated. Factorial analysis was used to evaluate the importance of the items. Affective sub-scale showed values superior to 0.5, suggesting relevance in those items, except for two items (A7 and A8). Behaviorsub-scale reports as well most of its values superior to 0.5, with exception of items B4 and B10. In terms of reliability, Cronbach’s alpha was calculated. The affective sub-scale obtained 0.581, being able to increase its value to 0.652 if A5 was removed. On the other hand, behavior sub-scale obtained 0.691, being able to increase to 0.710 if one item was removed. Results of the pilot show differences between students of the faculties of science, engineering and others, as well as differences by gender. Lastly, applications for the instrument are discussed as well as some opportunities to improve it.

    Panel: Innovación abierta, interdisciplinaria y colaborativa para formar en sustentabilidad energética a través de MOOCs e investigación educativa

    Objetivos del panel § Analizar las experiencias en el diseño, desarrollo e impartición de los doce MOOC de Energía, en el marco de un proyecto CONACYT/SENER, con el fin de ubicar los alcances y retos de la experiencia de construcción multidisciplinar. § Compartir los aportes de innovación abierta, ciencia abierta e investigación abierta, que se gestaron en el proyecto de investigación del Laboratorio Binacional, con el fin de ubicar aportes de educación abierta. § Valorar los resultados de investigación educativa resultantes de la exploración de los MOOC de energía, mediante estudios de casos y metodologías mixtas, con el fin de aportar inidicios para la innovación educativa en ambientes masivos a distancia.

    KomaKids: Promoviendo la competencia global a través de la creación de medios en escuelas primarias

    Esta investigación propone un programa intercultural en la escuela primaria con el objetivo de fomentar la educación para la ciudadanía global en el aula a través de la creación de trabajos de medios creativos en un programa llamado “KomaKids”. En este programa, se espera que la competencia global de los estudiantes se desarrolle en cuatro pasos principales: (1) a través del aprendizaje sobre la cultura extranjera; (2) reflexionando sobre su propia cultura a través de la producción de animación stop motion; (3) compartiendo sus impresiones a través de cartas de “amigos por correspondencia”; y, (4) a través de la conexión en tiempo real con compañeros de culturas extranjeras. Desde marzo de 2015, se realizaron periódicamente 23 talleres en escuelas primarias en seis países del mundo. Sin embargo, el enfoque para este documento será el programa del año académico 2018 con escuelas japonesas, tailandesas, brasileñas, singapurenses y mexicanas. El resultado, de acuerdo con la observación muestra que la implementación del programa “KomaKids” produjo cambios notables en la competencia global de los estudiantes de su edad. Este documento describirá los detalles sobre el programa y sugerirá la nueva función para promover la competencia global en el aula.

    House of cards: A diagnosis of needs and a proposasal of an instructional design for home insurance and natural disaster education

    According to a study done by the insurance company AXA, even 30 years have passed since the earthquake of 1985 in the surroundings of Mexico City, the culture of insurance has no showed significant steps. As consequence, until 2015 the percentage of properties insured against natural disasters increased from 3% in 1985 to 5% in 2015. In numbers, this means that in Mexico City, only 150,000 houses are insured against a total of 2.5 million uninsured (AXA Mexico, 2015). In an effort to promote the education of insurance and natural disasters in Mexico, an instructional design was developed during a course in the graduate School of Humanities and Education at the Tecnologico de Monterrey. Two stages were considered for this study: a survey and an online course proposal. The survey consisted in 14 questions and included questions related between insurance and general knowledge of risk disaster (specifically, earthquakes). The survey was applied in March 28, 2019 through a convenience sample of habitants in Mexico City. Data as gender, age and region in the city were asked, as well about previous experiences with natural disasters. A total of 91 participants completed the survey. Results presented an interest scenario: Only 1 of 4 participants could affirm that their house is insured, however, only 20% of the participants affirm to understand the terms and conditions of their insurance policy. Participants as well found difficult to understand other topics as safety regulations for construction, risk areas or the average price of a natural disasters’ insurance for homes. In this work, we present more detail about our results, and a first theoretical proposal of how to educate people through an online course about home insurance and natural disasters.
