Learning strategies and digital interventions: An analysis in the context of education for sustainable development
(2019-10-17) Santillan-Rosas, Irais Monserrat; Heredia-Escorza, Yolanda; Tecnológico de Monterrey
A future in which we can coexist with the environment in harmony. A future in which children can grow up healthy, happy, full of options and potential. Put simply: A sustainable future. How can digital learning strategies and interventions help shape and raise awareness about sustainable development? And how can online tools, such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) become better, more efRicient and even more successful in reaching out to the general audience? In hopes of Rinding the answers to these questions, the present dissertation is of exploratory scope with mixed design, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches to hear the voice of the users and receive feedback on these questions. A pre- post survey was applied in Rive MOOCs relevant to the theme of sustainable development during the period of January 2019 to June of the same year. As a second part of the study, interviews are taking place with users who have both completed and abandoned the MOOC, in order to compare and contrast the opinion, perspective and advice these participants would provide for future MOOCs that would be designed to teach about sustainable development. So far, the progress achieved during this research shows that users would rather hear about real life cases rather than only theory, and that they would appreciate the involvement of more interactive and social media usage for the activities inside the course in order to share with their contacts how they are learning about sustainable development.

MOOC Lab, a Massive Online Laboratory with Real Time access
(IEEE Advancing technology for humanity, 2019) Macías García, Manuel Eduardo; Rincón Flores, Elvira G.; Tecnológico de Monterrey
This study focuses on the usability of a remote laboratory as part of a massive, open and online course, better known as MOOC. The MOOC course for basic principles of Electric Energy is part of a Binational Laboratory project for the Intelligent Management of the Energy Sustainability and the Technological Formation, which has as one of its main objectives to train Spanish-speaking people, particularly from Mexico and Latin America, over topics of energy sustainability through MOOCs. Furthermore, the objective of this research work is to analyze the geographic scope of this massive remote laboratory, as well as the way the users work remotely on the platform. At present, by 2 times offered, the course enrolled 11087 participants and the MOOC Lab registered 3731 users that carry out 1705 lab sessions.

Towards probabilistic decision making on human activities modeled with business process diagrams
(International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (IFAAMAS), 2015-05-08) Ceballos, Hector G; Flores Solorio, Victor; Garcia-Vazquez, Juan P; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey
Agent-based technologies, originally proposed with the aim of assisting human activities, have been recently adopted in industry for automating business processes. Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is a standard notation for modeling business processes that provides a rich graphical representation that can be used for common understanding of processes but also for automation purposes. We propose a normal form of Business Process Diagrams (BPDs) based on Activity Theory that can be transformed into a Causal Bayesian Network, which in turn can be used to tackle with uncertainty introduced by human participants. We illustrate our approach on an Elderly health care scenario obtained from an actual contextual study.

Integrating semi-structured information using semantic technologies: An evaluation of tools and a case study on university rankings data
(SciTePress, 2014-08-31) Casas-Bayona, Alejandra; Ceballos Cansino, Héctor Gibrán
Information integration is not a trivial activity. Information managers face problems like: heterogeneity (in data, schemas, syntax and platforms), distribution and duplicity. In this paper we: 1) analyze ontology-based methodologies that provide mediation frameworks for integrating and reconciling information from structured data sources, and 2) propose the use of available semantic technologies for replicating such functionality. Our aim is providing an agile method for integrating and reconciling information from semistructured data (spreadsheets) and determining to which extent available semantic technologies minimize the need of ontological expertise for information integration. We present our findings and lessons learned from a case study on university rankings data.

Using activity theory and causal diagrams for designing multiagent systems that assist human activities
(Springer Verlag, 2013-11-30) Brena, Ramon; Ceballos Cansino, Héctor Gibrán; García Vázquez, Juan Pablo; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey
In this paper, we propose to use the Activity Theory and causal diagrams for modelling human activities with the aim of facilitating the specification of an agent-based assistance system through the Prometheus methodology. As a case study, we consider the elder medication activity, a recurring, complex and context-rich activity that involves several individual and collective activities which may require assistance. From the data collected in a contextual study of the elder medication, we modeled the medical consultation and refill medicine activities. Our results demonstrate that causal diagrams allow to capture the dynamics of the modelled activity, introduce the assistance of intelligent agents, extract the multiple scenarios synthesized in the activity structure and translate them into Prometheus artifacts.

Recommending intra-institutional scientific collaboration through coauthorship network visualization
(2013-10-28) Prada, Gustavo A; Cantu-Ortiz, Francisco J; Rodríguez-Acevez, Lucía Alejandra; Ceballos Cansino, Héctor Gibrán; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey
For improving research productivity, quality and dissemination, we propose the development of a visual recommendation tool summing up scientific collaboration best-practices found in literature. Social Network Analysis are applied to a coauthorship network for generating a Potential Collaboration Index (PCI) based on productivity, connectivity, similarity and expertise. This work is evaluated by recommending intra-institutional collaboration in a comprehensive university. The accuracy of PCI is documented, along with suggestions and comments from 27 interviewed researchers.

Mapping relational databases through ontology matching: A case study on information migration
(2011-10-24) Rodriguez-Mancha, Manuel; Cantu, Francisco J; Diaz-Prado, Aldo; Ceballos Cancino, Héctor Gibrán
In order to aid domain experts during data integration, several schema matching techniques have been proposed. Despite the facilities provided by these techniques, mappings between database schemas are still made manually. We propose a methodology for mapping two relational databases that uses ontology matching techniques and takes advantage of tools like D2R Server and AgreementMaker for automating mapping generation and for enabling unified access to information. We present the results obtained by some ontology matching algorithms in this context, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach.
