- A basic permanent magnets array interaction project for teaching artificial intelligence as a complementary model(IEEEXplore, 2020-08-18) Varas Ibarra, Carlos; Sánchez Ochoa Ariza, Fernando; Luna Calderón, Luis Julio; Molina Gutiérrez, Arturo; López Caudana, Edgar Omar; https://ror.org/03ayjn504There are new algorithms such as artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies that have achieved accurate representation of experimental systems. On the other hand, undergraduate freshmen students must understand AImethodologies since the industry has developed several products based on those and some academic problems also can be solved using AI. If those students do not learn how to model real systems using AI, they will be losing the opportunity of applying this powerful tool for solving several real problems in their professional life. Since the AI model can be a representation for forecasting the performance of the real model, this model can help the design process and provide information during its operation. This paper proposes an engineering project to teach artificial intelligence algorithms using real systems that are non-linear. Since permanent magnets are used in several applications, they can be attractive for modeling those when they are interacting between them; hence, this paper shows the interaction among them when they are deployed as an electrical power source. Moreover, this source could be classified as a renewable energy source. The basic generation of electrical energy is based on changing the magnetic field. Although the operation principle is basic, the electrical source has a non-liner description that is extremely complex so AI could be applied to create a model that represents those non-linear relationships in a precise manner. The main goal of this work is to describe an undergraduate project that can be used for teaching how to model a real system using AI algorithms. The main characteristics and properties of the permanent magnets are studied for the comprehension of how magnets can be implemented. It is also examined the viability for the construction of an electric motor using only permanent magnets, based on the analysis of different designs and materials and finally an AI model is created.
- A challenge-based learning experience in industrial engineering in the framework of education 4.0(2021-09-02) Gutiérrez Martínez, Yadira; Bustamante Bello, Rogelio; Navarro Tuch, Sergio Alberto; López Aguilar, Ariel Alejandro; Molina Espinosa, Arturo; Álvarez Icaza Longoria, Inés; Tecnologico de Monterrey, School of Engineering and SciencesCurrent tendencies of product, project and services development focus on a higher consideration of the User Experience (UX). Therefore, traditional training and teaching methodologies need to adapt to prepare the students to develop strategies for problem solving for their professional education. Such needs have risen and interest in tendencies such as education and Industry 4.0 has grown. This paper presents and analyzes the process and results of a teaching implementation methodology based on Challenge-Based Learning (CBL). The paper describes the process followed, explaining the methodology precedents that led to the final implementation case. It also mentions previous experiments on product analysis and home automation developments that are linked to implementation of the technology. This case’s implementation, analysis and experimentation integrated the use of Emotional Domotics (ED) Tools for the UX analysis, to grant feedback and compare the students’ results with the bio-metrical and emotional computational analysis. The methodology, described through this document, allowed the students to better understand and experience some of the implications of an interconnected system with instant information feedback. This allowed them to better grasp part of the impact that the tendency towards the Internet of Things (IoT) is currently having, and the impact of the improvement proposals from the students.

- A heuristic model for spare parts stocking based on Markov chains(MDPI, 2023-08-17) Pacheco Velázquez, Ernesto Armando; Robles Cárdenas, Manuel; Juárez Ordoñez, Saúl; Damy Solís, Abelardo Ernesto; Cárdenas Barrón, Leopoldo Eduardo; https://ror.org/03ayjn504Spare parts management has gained significant attention in recent years due to the considerable costs associated with backorders or excess inventory. This article addresses the challenge of determining the optimal number of spare parts to stock, assuming that the parts can be repaired. When an item fails, it is promptly sent for repair in a workshop. The time between failures and the repair time are assumed to follow an exponential distribution, although it should be noted that the results could be adapted to other distributions as well. This study introduces a heuristic method to find the optimal inventory level that minimizes the total cost, considering holding inventory, backorder, and repair costs. The research offers a valuable decision-making framework for determining the number of spare parts needed to minimize inventory costs, based on just two parameters: (1) the ratio of time to repair and time to failure, and (2) the ratio of the inventory holding cost of a spare part per day to the daily cost of an idle machine. To the best of our knowledge, there are no similar methodologies in the existing literature. The proposed method is straightforward to implement, employing graphs and simple computations. Therefore, it is anticipated to be highly beneficial for practitioners seeking a quick and reliable estimator of the optimal number of spare parts to stock for critical components.

- A hybrid local-global approach for handling ontologies in a multiagent system(2004-06-24) Brena, Ramon; Ceballos Cansino, Héctor Gibrán; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de MonterreyAs Ontologic knowledge gets more and more important in agent-based systems, its handling becomes crucial for successful applications. We propose a hybrid approach, in which part of the ontology is handled locally, using a "client component", and the rest of the ontological knowledge is handled by an "ontology agent", which is accessed by the other agents in the system through their client component. We propose specific methods for representing, storing, querying and translating ontologies for effective use in the context of the "JITIK" system, which is a multiagent system for knowledge and information distribution. We report as well a working prototype implementing our proposal.

- A knowledge-based entrepreneurial approach for business intelligence in strategic technologies: Bio-MEMS(2005-08-15) Cantu, Francisco J; Mora, Silvia P; Garcia, Aldo; Ceballos, Hector; Martinez, Sergio O; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de MonterreyWe propose a knowledge-based entrepreneurial (KBE) approach for business intelligence in strategic technologies at industrial sectors. The KBE approach is at the convergence of business intelligence and knowledge management and is used for advising users in business decisions and potential risks. Our approach comprises both a technology roadmap model as well as a knowledge-based entrepreneurial portal for various technologies. We use the Biological-Micro-Electrical-and- Mechanical-Systems industry (Bio-MEMS) to illustrate the approach. The technology roadmap model identifies the main actors, defines their roles and specifies the issues to be addressed. It handles information about main products, market trends, companies, research centers, application domains, products, standardization, and intellectual properties issues. The portal provides knowledge about the main actors through automation facilities based on digital libraries, searching and knowledge extraction from databases, data-ware houses and the Web. We explain how the KBE is helping Bio-MEMS users in business analysis.
- A knowledge-based information system for managing research programs and value creation in a university environment(2005-08-15) Cantu, Francisco J; Ceballos, Hector G; Mora, Silvia P; Escoffié, Miguel A; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de MonterreyWe describe an integrated information system for managing knowledge generated from research and innovation activities in a university environment and for the creation of economic value from the resulting knowledge and innovations by using an action research methodology. The system uses a computer ontology for defining objects and provides both a corporate memory and a distribution vehicle for the knowledge and innovations invented by professors and graduate students. It comprises a set of interrelated subsystems that include scientific publications and innovations, graduate theses, professors, students, and research units. It generates statistics of research activities, a wide variety of reports and on line consultations as well as a search engine and data mining facilities for knowledge extraction. A version of the system has been operational for about a year and has been an important tool for creating wealth from the knowledge generated by the research activities.
