Abstract

Learning English is crucial for immigrant students who are located on the border between Mexico and the United States and seek to adapt to their new environment. Immigrant shelters on the border face challenges in providing quality education to the children and youth who reside there. Information and communication technologies (ICT) can be a valuable tool to overcome these barriers and improve language learning. This paper addresses the use of ICT as a pedagogical strategy to improve English learning in migrant students residing in a shelter on the border. Existing literature on the use of ICT in language learning for migrants is reviewed, and the experience of an English teaching program using technology in a border shelter is analyzed. The results are presented and the implications for educational practice are discussed.
