    Psychometric assessment of a tool to evaluate motivation and knowledge of an energy-related topic MOOC

    Online education has increased over the last two decades in response to an increasing learning demand. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) seem to be an adequate tool to facilitate current educational dynamics. However, evaluating students’ motivation and learning to predict their engagement when attending a MOOC represents a challenge. This study combines characteristics of data from MOOC environments (e.g., large sample size) with well-established psychometric methodology (validity and reliability estimations) to attain a reliable resource to evaluate MOOC participants. Four independent datasets from MOOCs on energy-related topics were used to psychometrically examine the new “Initial survey of interests, motivations, and knowledge regarding MOOCs” (EIIMC-MOOC). The results indicate that the EIIMCMOOC is a valid, reliable and stable tool to evaluate initial motivation and prior knowledge of participants attending energy-related topics.

    Gamification everywhere and at all times. Strategies to increase motivation and engagement in higher education chemistry students

    In the last year, educational experiences have become increasingly challenging due to teaching classes remotely. For this reason, it has been necessary to develop educational strategies that accompany the use of new technologies to maintain student interest. One of these methodologies is gamification, implemented in school environments more frequently due to the pandemic and whose impact on student motivation and engagement needs to be explored. The literature shows that student participation in these contexts should be increased when applying this methodology, where teachers can also provide greater support. This research proposes improving these aspects by developing a gamification strategy that can be easily replicated in other environments. This study was carried out for a chemistry course at a university in central Mexico. This proposal details the short-, medium-, and long-term bonuses which stimulated and motivated students and achieved specific objectives. We also present the quantitative results of a questionnaire applied to 48 engineering students to identify their perceptions of how gamification could increase motivation and engagement in learning the subject of chemistry. In addition, pre- and post-knowledge tests were applied to determine whether there were changes in the learning outcomes. The results indicated that gamification increased student motivation and engagement, improved attitudes, promoted actions such as keeping the camera on during lectures and regular attendance, and improved student grades. This study fills the need for planning strategies to help improve student motivation in online classes and proposes an instrument to measure the results. It can be helpful to those interested in applying or adapting it in other disciplines.

    Innovative Education in MOOC for Sustainability: Learnings and Motivations

    This research project analyzes the motivation and learning perceived by the participants in four Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that use innovative education strategies in order to train the community in Education for Sustainability. These MOOCs were delivered during 2017 and the study forms part of the subproject “Open, Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Innovation to Train in Energy Sustainability through MOOCs”, which was offered in the portal of the Binational Laboratory for Intelligent Energy Sustainability Management and Technology Training. The method utilized was mixed, with a triangulation design approach according to the convergence model. This method consisted of two phases: the first being quantitative, with an online survey designed by experts in a Likert type scale, and the second being qualitative, in which valuations of the users were collected through diverse instruments such as focus groups and observations. The results obtained demonstrate the advantages of designing MOOCs that make use of innovative tools, in order to engage the students as much as possible, and the collateral impact on the development of digital abilities and skills in addition to the learning acquired with respect to sustainability.
