Novus projects: innovative ideas to build new opportunities upon technology-based avenues in Higher Education
(MDPI, 2022-10-12) Peña Ortega, Luis Omar; Portuguez Castro, May; Hernández Méndez, Rogelio Vicente; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey
This study describes a funding initiative that promotes educational innovation in a higher education institution in Mexico. This initiative, known as Novus, and carried out at Tecnologico de Monterrey, encourages professors to present educational innovation proposals by funding and monitoring research projects that promote student learning and competencies. These projects are based on digital technologies and pedagogies developed on the 26 campuses distributed throughout the country. This article presents a case study in which the historical data of Novus projects from 2012 to 2021 are reviewed. The results show that using digital technologies in these projects has favored more than 65,000 students on more than 1700 courses and the 1000 professors who teach these formative experiences. In addition, there are similar initiatives, especially in Latin America; however, they are still too few to contribute to improving student learning in an unprecedented time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the digital transformation of educational institutions has been accelerated, with many challenges and obstacles. Therefore, showing the result of initiatives that favor the professionalization of teachers through technological projects based on evidence will illustrate the possibilities for higher education to develop these experiences. This study aims to communicate the main ideas and findings that originated in the projects created with this initiative and to show how these experiences have impacted the teaching-learning processes of university students through the innovation proposed by teachers. The dissemination of these results can generate interest so that other institutions understand the benefits of this initiative and can continue to generate new opportunities for these contexts.

Strategic Innovation: Conception of Innovation among Social Sciences Researchers in Higher Education in Northwestern México
(Springer link, 2022-05-16) Olivas Castellanos, Elsa Catalina; De Gunther Delgado, Leonel; https://ror.org/03ayjn504
Researchers in universities are encouraged to produce innovative scientific research and participate in the international scientific community. In Mexico, public policies have intended to promote competitiveness in such social space. However, the lack of funding, researchers, and the polysemic conception of innovation in scientific production, amongst other factors, has scarcely promoted the economic, scientific and social progress in the region. This study (1) analyzes the concept of innovation among researchers in the field of Social Sciences to identify if they share a standard definition of such and if (2) the scholars have the impression that they perform innovations in their scientific production. The study compares researchers’ conceptions from three higher education institutions of the State of Sonora, Mexico. The Northwestern region of Mexico is significant due to its research production in Physics and Social Sciences, which is mainly generated in Higher Education institutions. We conducted semi-structured interviews and analyzed their views about their scientific production over the last five years. We reflect on the different types of relations scholars tie the concept of innovation. The main results show the different conceptions of innovation, especially its fragmentary character among social science researchers and how this inhibits the development of innovation and competitiveness. This result is a virtual space for policymakers to open a formative space for innovation and is an invitation to investigate the innovative or non-innovative character of scientific production in northwestern Mexico.

Architectures, spaces, and territories of illicit drug trafficking in Colombia and Mexico
(Sage Publisher, 2020-01-01) Aschner, Juan Pablo; Montero Bagatella, Juan Carlos; Universidad del Rosario; Tecnologico de Monterrey
This research applies an interdisciplinary approach to the bidirectional relationship between illicit drug trafficking activities (specifically, cocaine and opioid trafficking in Colombia and Mexico) and the architectures, spaces, and territories in which they are located. Certain spaces that determine or are determined by the actions of drug trafficking organizations are described, analyzed, and classified based on various methodologies and the use of academic, official, and press information. In addition, case studies are reconstructed using architectural and geographic representation mechanisms to exemplify and illustrate the main arguments. The paper examines the three stages of activity that constitute the illegal drug economy: production (involving the placement of crop fields and laboratories), distribution (which entails exploitation of mobility infrastructure), and crosscutting activities in relation to drug trafficking support spaces. The research provides an articulated interpretation of the various drug trafficking activities from a spatial perspective, the characterization of spaces that are important to criminal organizations and to the performance of their activities, and insights into the spatial thinking strategies and tactics associated with drug trafficking.

The Impact of Higher Education on Entrepreneurship and the Innovation Ecosystem: A Case Study in Mexico
(MDPI, 2019-10-11) Portuguez Castro, May; Ross Scheede, Carlos; Gómez Zermeño, Marcela Georgina; Tecnológico de Monterrey; Center for Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship, The University of Texas at Austin
Entrepreneurship is recognized as an engine for the economy. However, Latin America must promote higher opportunities for the creation of new businesses, especially for technology-based ventures. In this sense, the Center for Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CGIE) of the University of Texas at Austin offers a Master of Science in Technology Commercialization (MCCT) that prepares students with methodologies to promote the creation of new businesses in Mexico. This study aims to know the contribution of training to the creation of new companies, and its role in the innovation and the technology transfer processes, from the viewpoint of the participants. This research presents a case study that analyzes the impact of the MCCT through the analysis of the data of a survey answered by 109 former students of this center. Findings show that the methodologies developed by the MCCT allow the creation of technology-based enterprises and entrepreneurial skills in students. This study presents good practices that can be emulated by other countries in the region, as well as recognizing the great value the role of higher education in creating synergies between actors of the innovation ecosystem that strengthen social and economic growth.

Digital marketing in Mexico: exploratory study of the marketing mix of SMEs with trust seal
(Universidade Nove de Julho, 2016) Gutiérrez Leefmans, María Catalina; Nava Rogel, Rosa María; Trujillo León, María Andrea; Gutiérrez Leefmans, María Catalina; 392662; NAVA ROGEL, ROSA MARIA; 227088; TRUJILLO LEON, MARIA ANDREA; 216279; mtycarevalo
The study of digital marketing responds to technology changes as part of the digital economy. However, there is little scientific research of this subject in Mexican SMEs. This exploratory research aims to support the Mexican context knowledge through the observation to websites of SMEs with digital trust seal. The digital resources used as part of the marketing mix that can be observed externally in the websites were analyzed. The results showed that the most used resources were social networks, e-mail, those related to navigation ease and the variety of payment options. Nevertheless, other digital resources were underutilized. It was observed, in the SMEs studied, little attention in offering additional benefits and services to the product and low use of resources related to customer service. Despite showing a high interest in social networks, a quarter of the firms with a Facebook page did not give maintenance to it. It is concluded that Mexican SMEs are still at a basic stage in the use of digital resources in the marketing mix and that the marketing mix model is useful to observe the digital resources, but that some resources may belong to more than one element of the mix.

International Joint Ventures among Developing Country Multinationals: The Case of Salinas Group-Faw
(Portal Universia S.A., 2012) Montoya, Miguel A.; MONTOYA BAYARDO, MIGUEL ANGEL; 254097; mtycarevalo
I study the determinants of the success of international joint ventures (IJVs) among developing country multinational companies. From the analysis of the case of the IJV between the Mexican conglomerate Salinas Group and the Chinese automobile producer FAW I conclude two points. First, IJVs among developing country firms reveal an implicit assumption of a tension due to helping an industry competitor and gaining market knowledge and technology. Second, IJVs among developing country firms reveal the unique challenge of having to face the perceived disadvantage of lower quality of products created by developing country firms.

Entrepreneurial Clusters in China and Mexico implications for Competitiveness
(Portal Universia S.A., 2012) Hernández Rodríguez, Clemente; Montalvo Corzo, Raúl Francisco; HERNANDEZ RODRIGUEZ, CLEMENTE; 123254; MONTALVO CORZO, RAUL FRANCISCO; 83426; mtycarevalo
This research examines the common elements that we can find in the outcomes at a national level resulting from clusters. There are 7 common elements of cluster impact, namely: (1) agglomeration economies; (2) knowledge spillovers; (3) increases in productivity and efficiency; (4) positive impact in the operation; (5) economic impact; (6) sociopolitical impact; and, last but not least, (7) impacts on competitiveness. This paper uses radars to compare the cases of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Mexico. From theses radars we can infer insights for decision makers. For instance, we recommend a cluster policy for Mexico.
