Evaluating differences in mathematical competencies in middle school students during pandemic onditions through Preparatec Platform
(MDPI, 2022-08-12) Ocampo Díaz, Alejandra; Maldonado García, Blanca; Portuguez Castro, May; Tecnologico de Monterrey
This research proposes to evaluate the difference in essential mathematical competencies of middle school students transitioning to high school level under pandemic conditions (COVID-19) using the PreparaTec platform and Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) released items as an evaluation instrument. The study was conducted with 84 students from first semester high school at Prepa Tec (Tecnologico de Monterrey, Campus Cuernavaca) aged 14 and 15. The students were divided into three experimental groups and a control group. Three levels of mathematical competencies: reproduction, definitions, and calculations (level 1), connections and integration to solve problems (level 2), and reflection (level 3) were evaluated. We applied a pre-test at the beginning of the semester and a post-test at the end after using the PreparaTec platform. Both tests were written and applied in a face-to-face format. The study presents the findings regarding the impact of using the PreparaTec platform during the first semester in the three levels of mathematical competencies mentioned. The results obtained are presented in two analyses. The first analysis involves the results obtained per experimental group and according to the number of correct answers per group. The second analysis represents a comparison between the percentage of correct answers and the level of difficulty per question per student regarding the percentage, determined by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Spain in the format presented by PISA. The pre-test and post-test consisted of 23 questions from items released from PISA, which contemplated measuring the three levels of mathematical competence. The results showed an improvement of 57% in level 1 proficiency questions, 63.6% in level 2 proficiency, and 100% in level 3 proficiency. The findings indicate that new teaching strategies based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and more meaningful assessment forms further develop students’ mathematical competencies.

Interior environment design method for positive mental health in lockdown times:color, textures, objects, furniture and equipment
(MDPI, 2022-04-01) Martín López, Lucía; Fernández Díaz, Ana Belén; Tecnologico de Monterrey; Universidad Anáhuac México; https://ror.org/03ayjn504; https://ror.org/057g08s23
In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of a COVID-19 pandemic accompanied by a series of mass lockdowns. Some of the consequences of these lockdowns were (1) psychological problems, (2) development of simultaneous activities in spaces not prepared for it, and (3) indoor spaces that generate negative emotions in people. To improve people’s mental health during times of lockdown, this research proposes a methodology to design positive interior environments through color, texture, objects, furniture, and equipment. For this, 147 qualitative surveys were carried out, the structure of which is based on research methods and tools inherited from marketing discipline (Likert Scale and Customer Satisfaction Score). Several operative graphs were created to make decisions on the design of interior environments. To avoid some of the problems caused by indoor environments during lockdowns it is recommended that users return to paying attention to the design of the interior spaces of their homes. Note that there is no standard solution to this problem, but a method to design interior environments based on people’s positive mental health such as the one presented here can help. The trends found in this work open a field of exploration towards the improvement of interior spaces through neutral colors, natural materials (cotton and wood) and objects with which emotional relationships are created, either with the objects (collections) or because they allow you to connect with other people (technology). It is considered necessary to continue with the research by expanding the sample to incorporate into the analysis the most vulnerable sectors of population during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Lab-Tec@ Home: A cost-effective kit for online control engineering education
(MDPI, 2022-03-15) Sotelo, David; Sotelo, Carlos; Ramirez Mendoza, Ricardo Ambrocio; López Guajardo, Enrique Alfonso; Navarro Durán, David; Niño Juárez, Elvira del Rosario; Vargas Martínez, Adriana; https://ror.org/03ayjn504
It is widely recognized that a hands-on laboratory experience is useful in control engineering education. Herein, the students overcome the main gaps between theoretical knowledge and experimental setups. Nowadays, in times of crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual and remote laboratories are emerging as primary educational resources. However, in virtual labs, the students are not exposed to real life issues (i.e., equipment problems, noise, etc.) while in remote labs, communication and connectivity problems arise (i.e., network security, synchronization management, internet speed, etc.). Henceforth, this work presents an unpublished educational project named Lab-Tec@Home, and the aim of this research is to expand the access of hands-on control education at the undergraduate level. Here, students easily assemble a cost-effective laboratory kit at home and use it on their own computing devices connected with the external MATLAB/SimulinkTM application. Thus, students can test and validate theoretical concepts of control engineering such as: system model identification, and PID control design and test. The assessment results show that the proposed educational project enhances the learning experience and has outstanding positive feedback of more than 290 students who undertook massive flexible digital courses at Tecnologico de Monterrey. This makes the proposed educational project mainly suitable for control engineering courses.
