Fostering 4.0 digital literacy skills through attributes of openness: a review
(Athabasca University, 2024-11-01) Chiappe, Andrés; Díaz Ramírez, Juan Manuel; Ramírez Montoya, María Soledad; https://ror.org/02sqgkj21; https://ror.org/03ayjn504
During the last decade, a growing interest in open educational resources (OER) has developed among educational researchers worldwide. This trend involves the examination of possible effects over diverse learning domains such as the development of literacy and digital skills in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. To address this matter, a systematic literature review was conducted using PRISMA processes on 62 research articles published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals indexed in two major academic databases (Scielo and Scopus). Data collected during this literature review showed certain conditions that must be met to ensure a successful learning setup when OER are involved. Moreover, qualitative analysis revealed that certain attributes of openness are often more influential than others in the development of adequate literacy skills for the artificial intelligence era; also, there is an overall positive perception, from students and teachers alike, about the introduction of the attributes of openness and open materials into learning practices.

Enhancing STEAM education through augmented reality: the EduAR open platform experience
(Frontiers, 2024-05-27) Velarde Camaqui, Davis; Celaya Ramirez, Rosario; Contreras Fuentes, Yéssica Betzabe; Sanabria Zepeda, Jorge Carlos; https://ror.org/03ayjn504; https://ror.org/0297axj39
Quality education is pivotal for fostering innovation and development, with Augmented Reality (AR) offering transformative learning experiences. The absence of open-access platforms for AR resources hinders the democratization of educational technology. This study introduces EduAR, an open-access platform designed to provide validated AR resources for STEAM education, aiming to enhance learning processes and promote equitable access to quality education. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the platform’s usability was assessed using the System Usability Scale (SUS), where it achieved a high usability score, highlighting its user-friendliness and effectiveness. Additionally, qualitative feedback through focus groups provided insights into the platform’s impact on learning engagement and skill development. The study yielded the following findings: (a) Incorporating AR in STEAM disciplines through an open validated platform is an effective strategy for enriching learning and teaching processes; (b) The EduAR platform allows effective adoption due to its high usability and accessibility; (c) Design-Based Research is useful when looking to improve an AR educational platform; (d) EduAR is a valuable tool for providing equitable access to quality educational resources; and (e) EduAR promotes problem-solving and critical thinking among students. This comprehensive research underscores the potential of EduAR in enhancing educational outcomes, establishing a solid foundation for future advancements in educational technology and open educational resources (OER). Its benefit is foreseen for both teachers and researchers interested in the implementation of AR in courses within the framework of openness.

Validation of a scale to measure the adoption of open educational resources: students'perspective
(2024-05-26) Glasserman Morales, Leonardo David; Alcántar Nieblas, Carolina; Romero Rodriguez, José Maria; https://ror.org/03ayjn504; https://ror.org/04njjy449
It is increasingly evident that using technological resources has broadly impacted people's lives, including their education. One of the technologies implemented for several years is Open Educational Resources (OER), with elements of open practice to mitigate the impact of the digital divide. This article describes the validation process of an instrument to measure the adoption of OER as perceived by higher education students in Mexico (means, standard deviations and normality, construct validity and reliability). The study included 392 participants, of whom 117 (29.8%) were male, 273 (69.6%) were female and 2 (.5%) did not identify with either sex. Ages ranged from 18 to 62 years (M= 22.0 years, SD= 5.8). The instrument underwent descriptive statistics techniques, univariate normality analyses, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis using the maximum likelihood estimation method. The reliability of the measurement model was confirmed using Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega index. The resulting validated instrument investigates students' perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude, subjunctive standards, and behavioral control. For future studies, the application of the scale is suggested because of its manageable number of items and ease of administration, along with the examination of other validity tests that will help increase the robustness of the proposed measurement model, this measurement scale will be useful for teachers and researchers interested in understanding the impact of OER in education.

Educational innovation and digital competencies: the case of OER in a private Venezuelan university
(SpringerOpen Journal, 2016-02-25) Prince Machado, Marcella S.; Tenorio Sepúlveda, Gloria C.; Ramírez Montoya, María S.; Tecnologico de Monterrey
The challenge for universities in developing countries of Latin America is to provide quality education and to promote the development of the digital competencies necessary for an active citizenship. Nevertheless, the use of technology and open educational resources (OER) promote greater efficiency and social penetration. The objective of this research is to analyze how the attributes of innovation develop when OER are integrated with learning environments that promote digital skills. Case study and data recollection were applied to the interview, the log, the observation, and the document analysis. Results indicated that a combination of innovation attributes generates a change in: a) educational methodology, b) technological tools and ways to present its contents, and c) the way the teacher thinks and students act. The use of innovative elements allowed subjects to overcome space and time barriers, setting the foundation for the development of blended learning in the institution.
