    Psychometric assessment of a tool to evaluate motivation and knowledge of an energy-related topic MOOC

    Online education has increased over the last two decades in response to an increasing learning demand. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) seem to be an adequate tool to facilitate current educational dynamics. However, evaluating students’ motivation and learning to predict their engagement when attending a MOOC represents a challenge. This study combines characteristics of data from MOOC environments (e.g., large sample size) with well-established psychometric methodology (validity and reliability estimations) to attain a reliable resource to evaluate MOOC participants. Four independent datasets from MOOCs on energy-related topics were used to psychometrically examine the new “Initial survey of interests, motivations, and knowledge regarding MOOCs” (EIIMC-MOOC). The results indicate that the EIIMCMOOC is a valid, reliable and stable tool to evaluate initial motivation and prior knowledge of participants attending energy-related topics.

    Correlation analysis between expectancy-value and achievement goals in MOOCs on energy sustainability: Profiles with higher engagement

    Purpose – This research seeks to analyze the interrelationship that exists between expectancy-value and achievement goals as factors that are decisive for participants’ higher engagement in 12 MOOCs on energy sustainability and to determine the profile of participants achieving higher success rates. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative–quantitative study of correlational and descriptive scope is carried out on two instruments based on pre- and post-tests of 6,029 participants, which is followed by a Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) distributed by code families to identify participants’ main motivations to take MOOCs.

    Incidence of digital competences in the completion rates of e-Learning training. Case study on Energy Sustainability MOOCs

    Contribution: This article analyzes the correlation between users' digital competencies and their tendencies to successfully complete energy sustainability massive online open courses (MOOCs). In addition to reviewing whether digital competencies are a predictor of the effective completion of the course, this article analyzes whether participants acquire higher levels of digital competence through interaction in the course. Background: Completion rates of MOOCs typically range between 5% and 8%, with respect to registered participants. According to the literature, low rates may be due to factors such as students' lack of motivation or digital competence limitations. Research Questions: RQ1: Is there a correlation between the level of digital competence declared by the participants and their tendency to successfully complete the MOOC? RQ2: Does participation in a MOOC improve participants' digital competencies? Methodology: Two surveys, one pretest and one post-test (before and after the MOOCs), were applied to assess the digital competence levels of the participants. The total population of participants in the 12 MOOCs was 123,124 unique users, from which 9075 participants (pretest)--7.37% of the universe--and 6029 participants (post-test)--35.70% of the universe--were extracted as a sample. To determine its internal consistency, an exploratory factorial analysis was performed on both instruments and a Cronbach's alpha greater than 0.8 was obtained in all of its dimensions. Findings: A significant level of moderate to high correlation between the declared levels of digital competence and the trend toward successful completion of the MOOCs under study was observed. However, a significant increase was not demonstrated in the levels of digital competence acquired in the interaction with MOOCs. Conclusions: The level of digital competence of a participant in a MOOC was a valid predictor of their tendency to finish it. Although no increase in the levels of digital competence acquired through MOOCs was demonstrated, this may be because the subject matter of the MOOCs was alien to the indicators and dimensions of the digital competence. Further research could analyze the effectiveness of MOOCs in terms of digital competition at the acquired levels of competition.

    Gamification in MOOCs: Engagement application test in energy sustainability courses

    Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have triggered a sudden change in the educational scene. Its characteristics of being free, heterogeneous, multi-thematic, and fostering lifelong learning have completely changed the instructional design scene, allowing these innovations and new architectures of teaching and learning to be included. However, MOOCs have been criticized by the scientific community for their high dropout rates and low overall completion rates, which has called into question their effectiveness as a pedagogical tool. This paper analyzes how the application of gamification strategies in MOOCs on energy sustainability affects participants’ engagement and seeks to identify what types of interactive gamification media are more useful in generating interest and motivation in students. In order to do so, a mixed quasi-experimental method is used. A gamification board with challenges, badges, and leaderboards to a sample is used, and at the same time, this platform is analyzed using the integrated theoretical gamification model in e-learning environments. In the MOOCs where gamification strategies were applied, a global completion rate of 14.43% was obtained, while in those without gamification, 6.162% was obtained. Likewise, the degree of student engagement with respect to the completion rate of activities was much higher in the gamified platform (28.032%) than in the traditional design (13.252%). The results show that applying gamification strategies in MOOCs achieves a higher level of engagement and student motivation.

    Student engagement as predictor of xMOOC completion: An analysis from five courses on energy sustainability

    MOOC are characterized as being courses to which a large number of students enroll, but only a small fraction completes them. An understanding of students' engagement construct is essential to minimize dropout rates. This research is of a quantitative design and exploratory in nature, and investigates the interaction between contextual factors (demographic characteristics), student engagement types (academic, behavioral, cognitive and affective), and learning outcomes, with the objective of identifying the factors that are associated with completion of massive and open online courses. Two logistic models were adjusted in two samples, general and secondary, with the binary dependent variable defined as completes the course yes/no. The results in the general sample (15% completion rate) showed that the probabilities of a participant completing the course are positively and significantly related to participation in the forum and the participant educational level, and negatively related to gender (female) and age. The results in the secondary sample (87% completion rate) showed that the probabilities of a participant completing the course are positively and significantly related to participation in the forum, gender (female), and the motivation and satisfaction indexes, and negatively related to age, having previous experience in other MOOCs, and self-efficacy and task strategies indexes. The results lead to ideas on how these variables can be used to support students to persist in these learning environments.

    Systematic Mapping Study of Academic Engagement in MOOC

    MOOCs are presented as an affordable and easily accessible modality that offers the opportunity to democratize education in our time; however, this convenience training favors a low completion rate of the participants. Faced with this situation, scholars have suggested that it is necessary to deepen the construct of academic engagement, a concept that has been addressed in the study of face-to-face training, to better understand how students participate in this educational modality. This article systematically explores the existing literature, in the period of 2015-2018, about the construct of academic engagement in online, massive and open learning courses, through a Systematic Mapping of Literature, a method which aims to identify the characteristics of production in a given subject. The results show that there is a considerable increase in published articles that associate academic engagement and MOOCs, mainly from the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Most of the mapped publications employ qualitative methods, with an exploratory approach, although there are several correlational studies. The study of participation patterns and instructional design appear as the main topics of interest in the field. In addition to providing a general overview of production on the subject, the research provides accurate information that will identify works for more in-depth reviews. Thus, it also offers a replicable and flexible literature search method for different research interests.

    En búsqueda del entendimiento en una torre de Babel: propuesta de un modelo para la innovación educativa en redes de colaboración

    Las redes de colaboración potencialmente permiten el desarrollo de innovaciones que generan cambios de alto impacto. Los miembros de una red de esta índole tienen siempre objetivos en común, pero también se caracterizan por tener una amplia diversidad de perfiles: distintos idiomas, disciplinas, experiencias profesionales y niveles educativos, entre otras cualidades. Esto puede, en ocasiones, dificultar el entendimiento entre ellos cuando se ha de trabajar colaborativamente. Este artículo presenta el caso de estudio de una red de innovación educativa; se describe su propósito, su dinámica de trabajo y una serie de tensiones experimentadas en procesos de colaboración. Las tensiones son retos a superar derivados de un trabajo entre personas con características múltiples; y representan conexiones entre los nodos de una red que deben ser atendidas para evitar posibles rupturas. Las tensiones detectadas se tomaron como oportunidades para crear una propuesta de modelo para la colaboración. Dicho modelo tiene como objetivo facilitar los procesos de comunicación y trabajo entre los integrantes de un grupo, promoviendo una colaboración más eficiente.

    Motivation and knowledge: pre-assessment and post-assessment of MOOC participants from an energy and sustainability project

    Understanding factors promoting or preventing participants’ completion of a massive open online course (MOOC) is an important research topic, as attrition rates remain high for this environment. Motivation and digital skills have been identified as aspects promoting student engagement in a MOOC, and they are considered necessary for success.  However, evaluation of these factors has often relied on tools for which the psychometric properties have not been explored; this suggests that researchers may be working with potentially inaccurate information for judging participants’ profiles. Through a set of analyses (t-test, exploratory factor analysis, correlation), this study explores the relationship between information collected by administering valid and reliable pre and post instruments to measure traits of MOOC attendees. The findings from this study support previously reported outcomes concerning the strong relationships among motivation, previous knowledge, and perceived satisfaction factors for MOOC completers. Moreover, this study provides evidence of the feasibility of developing valid assessments for evaluation purposes.

    Diseño y validación de un test de evaluación del potencial en emprendimiento social

    El emprendedor social se reconoce como una persona que es capaz de determinar oportunidades de negocio, a la vez que soluciona un problema que afecta a otras personas. En la literatura se encuentran pocos estudios que estén enfocados hacia este tipo de emprendedor, ya que generalmente se realizan investigaciones sobre los emprendedores en general, sin reconocer las características de los emprendedores sociales. Este estudio valida un instrumento diseñado para medir el potencial en emprendimiento social que tiene una persona. La finalidad del instrumento es que funcione como una herramienta para quienes realizan labores de incubación de empresas, así como de capacitación para los emprendedores sociales; también puede ser utilizado dentro de organizaciones que manejen programas de responsabilidad social, como las cooperativas, con el fin de que tomen en cuenta las necesidades del emprendedor a la hora de diseñar estrategias de desarrollo para estas personas y sus emprendimientos. Además, para que los mismos emprendedores puedan determinar su potencial en el desarrollo de estas empresas.
