- A systematic mapping literature review of education around sexual and gender diversities(Frontiers, 2022-08-23) López Orozco, Christian Fernando; López Caudana, Edgar Omar; Ponce Cruz, Pedro; https://ror.org/03ayjn504Education around sexual and gender identities is highly important to understand diversity and prevent discrimination, violence, and even murder. Nevertheless, educational institutions around the world are lacking a curriculum that explicitly includes diversity and acknowledges the LGBTQ+ community, a minority that over the years has been facing consequences from this exclusion. This study presents a detailed description of the process applied to analyze the studies using a systematic mapping literature review, as well as the positive results found from those educational institutions that started their path to inclusion around sexual and gender diversities through their curricula. The research questions targeted in this work are: What is being taught in educational institutions regarding sexual and gender diversities? What are the approaches used inside the classrooms to teach sexual and gender diversities? Which students are receiving education regarding sexual and gender diversities? Is there a technological approach and/or tool used to teach sexual and gender diversities? After applying the filtering processes, 69 studies were selected from five dierent online libraries: ACM, DOAJ, Lens.org, SCOPUS, and SpringerLink. The conclusions made from the findings of this review are that those studies that do tackle concerns around the topic have proven to benefit the LGBTQ+ community, the education around sexual and gender diversities predominates within the healthcare field, there are a lack of studies around this topic in Latin American countries, and technological tools are minimally used during the teaching processes.
- Improving the attention span of elementary school children for physical education through an NAO robotics platform in developed countries(Springer Nature, 2022-03-17) Ponce Cruz, Pedro; Molina Gutiérrez, Arturo; Baltazar Reyes, Germán Eduardo; Mazon Parra, Nancy; https://ror.org/03ayjn504Education today faces a powerful enemy: the lack of interest from students, who, even if attending class, find themselves distracted. This enemy has been in our schools for a long time, but it has never been as strong as it is now. Technology has made it strong; phone-bearing children have become its ally. This investigation intends to return technology to our side as educators by proposing the use of an assistive robot, proving that it attracts the attention of students and motivates them to enjoy Physical Education (PE) class, where children learn how to live a healthy life, avoiding diseases and conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart problems. To prove this, we measured the attention levels and motivation of the students in two primary school classes, one, a traditional class, and the other, a robot-assisted class. The data was analyzed from both engineering and psychological perspectives. This study concludes that the attention span of children improves, and their motivation increases as a result of using an NAO robot. Consequently, a robot-assisted PE class can decrease diabetes, obesity, and strengthen heart functions when the children learn how to live a healthy life effectively.

Two important factors causing this lack of interest are the predominant methodology used in Mexican schools and the technology as a barrier for attention. The methodology that institutions have followed has become an issue because of its very traditional approach, with the professor giving all the theoretical material to the students while they listen and memorize the contents, and, if we add the issue of the growing access to technological devices for students, children carrying a phone are more likely to be distracted. This study aims to integrate technology through assistive robots as a beneficial tool for educators, in order to improve the attention span of students by making the learning process in multiple areas of the Mexican curriculum more dynamic, therefore obtaining better results. To prove this, four different approaches were implemented; three in elementary schools and one in higher education: the LEGO® robotic kit and the NAO robot for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) teaching, the NAO robot for physical education (PE), and the PhantomX Hexapod, respectively. Each of these technological approaches was applied by considering both control and experimental groups, in order to compare the data and provide conclusions. Finally, this study proves that the attention span is indeed improved as a result of implementing robotic platforms during the teaching process, allowing the children to become more motivated during their PE class and become more proactive and retain more information during their STEM classes.

For this study, we used a new approach with project-based learning to go beyond the typical environment in higher education and bring solutions to real-life scenarios. The project was developed with undergraduate engineering students in collaboration with a rehabilitation institute in Mexico City to design a physical therapy routine using the NAO robot. It allowed interaction between young patients in real time and fostered empathy while developing a final usable product. The study measured the usability of the robotic platform during the rehabilitation sessions and the reproducibility of the project through Cronbach's alpha evaluation. The usability results show a higher interest in the project from both the patients and the medical staff involved while constructing the material needed to develop a product that matches the standards given by the rehabilitation institute.
- Role assignment analysis of an assistive robotic platform in a high school mathematics class, through a gamification and usability evaluation(Springer, 2020-09-18) Baltazar Reyes, Germán Eduardo; López Caudana, Edgar Omar; Ponce Cruz, Pedro; Mazon Parra, Nancy; https://ror.org/03ayjn504; https://ror.org/01tmp8f25This project implements an assistive robotic platform in a mathematics high school class to support the professor’s teaching process while analyzing its performance by using a gamification approach and the Octalysis framework. The results obtained from this study evaluated both the platform usability and the general class perception from the students and the professors involved in the experimentation. This paper demonstrates that the implementation of a robotic platform as a supportive tool for the professor improves the class’ dynamism and the cooperative behavior of the students, by following the Octalysis approach. Finally, the results helped to determine a better role assignment for future cases where the professor implements a robotic platform during class, leaving the theoretical explanations and class control to the professor, and giving the robot the role of enhancing the activities and review exercises.

Although there have been constant changes in educational programs to improve, Mexico has consistently placed itself in the last places of The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students. One of the reasons given is that Mexican students are not sufficiently motivated during classes, resulting in a decline in academic qualifications. In the present report, we developed and implemented an experimental protocol that allows us to improve the levels of focusing on high school students during a math class using an NAO robot. Three different scenarios were studied: one with a mathematics teacher traditionally giving a complete class, another where the robot teaches the course and finally one where both the teacher and the robot cooperate to provide explanations and exercises. Electroencephalogram (EEG) readings were used in the students to observe levels of attention, while a group of Psychology students monitored their physical behavior through a body language analysis protocol.

This work proposes the use of robotic platforms inside elementary schools and universities to improve and evaluate the usability and efectiveness of robots on students’ attention spans, motivation, and knowledge acquirement during their classes. This work mentions a case of study in Mexico where the use of the robotic platforms was evaluated. To evaluate the learning process of undergraduate students, a hexapod robot was used throughout a basic programming course to help the students learn about robotics programming and path planning algorithms. At the end of the course, several surveys were given to the students to evaluate their perceptions about the course and the use of the robotic platform. In the elementary school, a NAO Robot was used to give students four diferent diligences in physics, mathematics and physical education classes. During these experimentations, the attention span of the students and their ability to use the robotic platforms were observed, using a behavior observation protocol; also, their knowledge acquisition before and after class was evaluated. The results showed that the use of a robotic platform in class helps the students improve their knowledge acquisition and increases their motivation and attention span. Also, the surveys and usability analysis demonstrate that the design of the diligences and course projects were sufcient to generate greater interest among the students in the topics taught in school.

However, for this last one seems to be poor documentation about how higher education institutions are dealing with it. It is evident that universities are applying concepts like Open Innovation Laboratories, however it is not clear the methodologies or resources they are using. Tecnologico de Monterrey recently created its own laboratory and in this article we present the motives, concepts and uses of it in the context of higher education. Different approaches are made, from the development of core competences concepts to the physical and virtual tools used in the lab. Two study cases are briefly presented in order to illuminate how external actors are collaborating with internal actors in an Open Innovation process.

Although there are several papers that use NAO as a social robot, this paper goes further integrating the robot inside the classes as well as an assistive tool to support the teachers. A multidisciplinary work was implemented with the junior high school in which the NAO robot was used. Two focus groups were established for the study. One of them use the robot during the classes and the other one was running the classes in conventional manner. A comparison about the students’ attention was conducted to validate the proposed methodology. The results show that the level of attention and motivation were improved.
