- Evidence-Based Educational Innovation Model Linked to Digital Information Competence in the Framework of Education 4.0(2021-09-08) Mena, Juanjo; Sarango Lapo, Celia Paola; Ramírez Montoya, María Soledad; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de MonterreyAbstract: Education 4.0 promotes visualizing how teachers’ traditional digital competencies adopt innovative practices. The present research analyzes the relationship between the perceived digital information competencies (DICs) of university teachers and the implementation of evidence-based, innovative actions (EBEI) in a model that supports innovative practices. The research method applied was the mixed method. In the quantitative phase, the final sample consisted of 271 teachers. The ad hoc digital competency-open educational resource scale (DC-OER) was applied to measure their perception of DIC. In the qualitative phase, 15 teachers were interviewed. The results showed (a) a close relationship between the fulfillment of EBEI and the support of DIC; (b) in quantitative results, in most cases, the means are close to the central value 3, and the standard deviation is close to 1, which indicates higher DIC; (c) the qualitative results indicate that teachers search, select, evaluate information, and produce new knowledge; and (d) the theoretical model of EBEI links DIC to the formation of digital citizenship. The data can be of value to the academic community in relevant environments within the framework of Education 4.0. As a future line of research, we envision analyzing the perceived digital competencies of teachers versus their effective behavior
- Gamification: a new key for enhancing engagement in MOOCs on energy?(Springer, 2021-06-15) Mena, Juanjo; Rincón Flores, Elvira Guadalupe; Ramírez Montoya, María SoledadGamification is an innovative educational strategy that uses elements of games for educational purposes, including the completion of appealing challenges to increase student levels of engagement and learning. The objective of this research is to assess the effects of gamification as a teaching method used in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) about clean and conventional energy. This research is part of the project “Laboratorio Binacional para la Gestión Inteligente de la Sustentabilidad Energética y la Formación Tecnológica” [Binational Laboratory for the Intelligent Management of Sustainable Energy and Technological Formation]. A total of 4819 participants enrolled in the course, 621 passed the course, and 647 completed the gamified challenge. Results showthe impact of gamification on the cognitive, social, and emotional dimensions, where more than 90% of the participants agreed about feeling more motivated and challenged than when using traditional teaching methods. Therefore, the use of this methodology in online teaching could be very impactful in personalizing and enhancing the learning opportunities of massive, open online courses.
- In-service teachers’ self-perceptions of digital competence and OER use as determined by a xMOOC training course(Elsevier, 2017-09) Ramírez-Montoya, María-Soledad; Mena, Juanjo; Rodríguez-Arroyo, José A.; Tecnologico de Monterrey; Matthieu GuittonDigital Competence (DC) is considered a driver for educational innovation since its immediate result is the production of new digital media resources for teaching such as Open Educational Resources (OER). This study aims to determine teachers' DC through their participation in a MOOC training course and establish the extent to which DC better enables the production of OER. A group of 863 in-service teachers participated in the study. A 26-item validated questionnaire on DC and the use of OER was delivered to participants, and course facilitators' weekly reports were collected. An ordinal logarithmic regression was conducted to verify whether teachers who hold positive self-perceptions of DC are more prone to using OER in their teaching. Mean differences between traditional teaching and online teaching were also tested. Reports were content analysed using a SWOT matrix. Our model predicts that only in-service teachers that perceive themselves as digital experts can reach an intermediate level in the production of OER. Furthermore, online teaching significantly favours teachers' DC but is highly significant in OER production. The main implication is that training teachers' DC is required to prepare teachers for the use of OER; however, teacher education should first address teachers’ actual level of performance.
