- Identifying Entrepreneurial Interest and Skills among University Students(MDPI, 2021-06-22) Portuguez Castro, May; Gómez Zermeño, Marcela Georgina; GOMEZ ZERMEÑO, MARCELA GEORGINA; 203310; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey; Madichie, Nnamdi O.This study presents the profile of the participants in an online course on entrepreneurship that followed a challenge-based learning methodology and was applied to undergraduate students at a university in Mexico. Students were given challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the course and were allowed to recognize their interest in solving these problems. This paper seeks to identify the entrepreneurial profile of university students through their experiences, interests, attitudes, and entrepreneurial skills. Although entrepreneurship courses are offered more frequently in universities, it is necessary to know the characteristics of the students’ interest and their abilities to continue strengthening them. The data were collected through a questionnaire conducted with 20 multidisciplinary participants. The analysis compared the results of those who finished the course vs. those who did not to determine the significant differences in their answers. The results showed that the participants generated sustainable business ideas that favor local and global problems. Additionally, the students showed great interest in social entrepreneurship and developing companies based on the knowledge acquired during their university studies. It is recommended to continue with the training so that these ideas can become real ventures through linkages with other actors in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and favor the solution of sustainable problems. The questionnaire instrument enabled identifying the students’ characteristics, interests, and entrepreneurial skills, which could be strengthened with other programs that train them. It was also possible to recognize skills that they did not possess before starting the e-learning course which require further strengthening.
- Educational challenges for computational thinking in K–12 education: A systematic literature review of “Scratch” as an innovative programming tool(MDPI journals, 2021-05-21) Montiel, Hugo; Gómez Zermeño, Marcela Georgina; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de MonterreyThe use of information and communications technologies (ICTs) has emerged as an educational response amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, providing students the technological tools that enable them to acquire or strengthen the necessary digital skills to develop computational knowledge. The purpose of this study was to analyze Scratch, a programming language used to foster the teaching of computational thinking, particularly in K–12 education. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted, identifying 30 articles on the topic of Scratch and computational thinking in the database ProQuest Central from January 2010 to May 2020. These articles were analyzed to identify the use of Scratch worldwide and the educational impact it has on computational thinking, specifically in K–12 education. The results highlight the following: (1) countries which incorporated Scratch into their teachers’ study plans (curricula); (2) the transformation of learning environments that Scratch promotes; and (3) the importance of incorporating tools like Scratch in the current curricula and, more importantly, developing the framework for innovative ICTs capable of transforming education.
- Analysis of Teachers’ Opinions about Student Participation in Entrepreneurial Activities in an Institution of Higher Education(IJAHSSS, 2020-06-19) Portuguez Castro, May; Gómez Zermeño, Marcela Georgina; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de MonterreyEntrepreneurial education is increasingly relevant, and the number of study centers that are incorporating these programs is on the rise. The role of universities is central to the development of citizens who collaborate with companies to design innovative products or services. However, the formation of the entrepreneurial mindset in students is difficult to achieve, so it is necessary to create programs that are strengthened by transversal instruction in different careers. This article aims to analyze the opinions of professors in a Mexican university about the participation of under-graduate students in entrepreneurial activities within their programs. This research used a quantitative methodology to determine whether students were encouraged to develop entrepreneurial skills and if they could identify those skills. In total, 60 teachers from different campuses and majors of six schools in the University answered a questionnaire. The results showed that most teachers believed that the students in their programs could interact with entrepreneurs, participate in activities related to entrepreneurship as required, and learn entrepreneurial skills in their majors. However, most of the teachers indicated that the students also needed to learn more about entrepreneurship and recognized little or nothing about their entrepreneurial skills, and that no instrument existed to identify and measure those skills. When analyzing the teachers’ responses from three schools of the university, we observed that the teachers felt that the subject of entrepreneurship was less addressed in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences than in the Schools of Engineering and Sciences or Architecture and Design. Therefore, we recommend strengthening career programs with activities that identify and develop entrepreneurial skills. The results from this research can guide the teachers and authorities of the institution in determining opportunity areas and activities that promote the entrepreneurial mindset that the institution has set as a goal in its 2030 educative model.
- Challenge Based Learning: Innovative Pedagogy for Sustainability through e-Learning in Higher Education(MDPI, 2020-05-15) Portuguez Castro, May; Gómez Zermeño, Marcela Georgina; http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7531-6956; Tecnológico de Monterrey; Vázquez-Cano, Esteban; López Meneses, EloyChallenge-Based Learning (CBL) is an innovative teaching methodology that engages students to resolve real-world challenges while applying the knowledge they acquired during their professional training. This article describes the results of the implementation of an online course on entrepreneurship that utilized CBL with a group of 20 undergraduate students from various disciplines in a university in Mexico. During the course, challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations were presented to the participants, making it possible to observe the students’ interest in resolving these problems. This research uses a case study methodology and seeks to determine the CBL elements in the e-learning modality. The results showed that the participants generated sustainable business ideas aimed to resolve local, national, and global problems. The recommendations are to continue the formation of the businesses proposed in the project. These ideas can become real ventures that connect various actors in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and will continue to strengthen transversal skills such as teamwork and communication.
- Training needs for successful businesswomen: a narrative analysis of stories of women entrepreneurs(2020) Portuguez Castro, May; Gómez Zermeño, Marcela Georgina; Tecnológico de MonterreyThis research is a qualitative study that develops a narrative analysis of the entrepreneurial experiences of two women business owners in the State of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. This study sought to understand the training needs of female entrepreneurs from the experiences of these women who started their own companies. This issue of entrepreneurship arouses much curiosity and interest in the characteristics of the people who undertake it and how they develop their plans. It is essential to analyse the experiences of entrepreneurs to incorporate the lessons learned into training programs that fulfil the needs and learning styles of people starting and operating their own companies. The women consulted recommended as the key topics in a training program the incorporation of the family into the training processes, the methodologies for scaling up businesses, tools that facilitate the management of revenue, expenses, and earnings, activities that increase self-efficacy, how to search for funding resources and investment capital, and networking.
- The Impact of Higher Education on Entrepreneurship and the Innovation Ecosystem: A Case Study in Mexico(MDPI, 2019-10-11) Portuguez Castro, May; Ross Scheede, Carlos; Gómez Zermeño, Marcela Georgina; Tecnológico de Monterrey; Center for Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship, The University of Texas at AustinEntrepreneurship is recognized as an engine for the economy. However, Latin America must promote higher opportunities for the creation of new businesses, especially for technology-based ventures. In this sense, the Center for Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CGIE) of the University of Texas at Austin offers a Master of Science in Technology Commercialization (MCCT) that prepares students with methodologies to promote the creation of new businesses in Mexico. This study aims to know the contribution of training to the creation of new companies, and its role in the innovation and the technology transfer processes, from the viewpoint of the participants. This research presents a case study that analyzes the impact of the MCCT through the analysis of the data of a survey answered by 109 former students of this center. Findings show that the methodologies developed by the MCCT allow the creation of technology-based enterprises and entrepreneurial skills in students. This study presents good practices that can be emulated by other countries in the region, as well as recognizing the great value the role of higher education in creating synergies between actors of the innovation ecosystem that strengthen social and economic growth.
