    Examining the level of perceived achievement of complex thinking competency in health sciences students and its relevance to the graduate profile

    This article presents the findings of a study conducted on health sciences students in their last semester of training regarding their perceived achievement of the complex thinking competency and its sub-competencies. The objective was to gain insight into how these students perceive the cognitive competencies and skills acquired during their university career as relevant to meet the challenges of their future professions. This study contrasts the perception of achievement of complex thinking competence by gender of the participants, as well as compared to students from other disciplines, with the intention of identifying significant differences. This competency's selection lies in its relevance to decision-making when facing problems, which is fundamental for any contemporary professional. This study relied on a representative convenience sample of graduating candidates from a university in western Mexico. Methodologically, the researchers used descriptive analyses and a validated instrument. The results indicated that the sample students' perceived achievement was very high and balanced, i.e., no significant differences existed by gender or the perception of their sub-competencies. This study revealed a significant difference compared to other disciplinary areas; the medical and health sciences graduate candidates' perceived achievement of competency development was higher.

    Financial literacy as a key to entrepreneurship education: a multi-case study exploring diversity and inclusion

    This article presents the results of the financial literacy assessment of young Mexican students between the ages of 17 and 24 enrolled in public and private institutions in five Mexican cities. This study’s objective was to approach the financial knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes of young Mexicans through focus groups and questionnaires to identify their perceptions of complex thinking and its use for financial products and services. The most relevant findings suggest that (a) most of the young participants in the study use banking services through their parents, (b) there are significant gender differences in financial knowledge and behaviors, (c) critical thinking significantly and positively correlates with financial behaviors and attitudes, and (d) the level of critical thinking predicts financial behavior. There is a need to develop women’s critical thinking to discern between the financial behavior they socially imitate and their capabilities to become more involved in financial issues, thus decreasing the gender gap.

    Predicting open education competency level: A machine learning approach

    This article aims to study open education competency data through machine learning models to determine whether models can be built on decision rules using the features from the students' perceptions and classify them by the level of competency. Data was collected from a convenience sample of 326 students from 26 countries using the eOpen instrument. Based on a quantitative research approach, we analyzed the eOpen data using two machine learning models considering these findings: 1) derivation of decision rules from students' perceptions of knowledge, skills, and attitudes or values related to open education to predict their competence level using Decision Trees and Random Forests models, 2) analysis of the prediction errors in the machine learning models to find bias, and 3) description of decision trees from the machine learning models to understand the choices that both models made to predict the competency levels. The results confirmed our hypothesis that the students' perceptions of their knowledge, skills, and attitudes or values related to open education and its sub-competencies produced satisfactory data for building machine learning models to predict the participants' competency levels.

    Stories about gender inequalities and influence factors: a science club case study

    This article explores the perception of gender inequality in science and the influencing factors. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with students belonging to a science club; we present it as a case study. This research sheds light on what high school and university students studying Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) perceive in Mexico, where the gender gap is the highest of all scientific disciplines, considering the relationship between science and gender through their study experiences and perspectives. The findings mainly revealed two positions: (1) denial of gender inequalities; and (2) recognition of gender inequalities associated with biological, psychological, and social factors. It is precisely this last factor that is based on a feminist position. How students define and label inequalities varies according to their participation in previous formative experiences linked to gender and contextual influences. Science education activities with a gender perspective are necessary in non-formal education spaces such as science clubs. In this sense, this work offers recommendations that can stimulate the design of training actions for a better-balanced integration of science and gender.

    Use of ChatGPT at university as a tool for complex thinking:students' perceived usefulness

    Artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-based chatbots, such as ChatGPT, are transforming the approach to education. In particular, ChatGPT's potential to process large amounts of data and learn from user interactions makes it a beneficial resource for students, albeit with some reluctance from some teachers. This study aimed to explore the acceptance of ChatGPT by university students. The researchers administered an online survey to 400 Spanish university students aged 18-64 (M = 21.80; SD = 6.40). The results of the methodological approach based on the UTAUT2 model for technology adoption showed that: 1) gender was not a determining variable in any construct while the experience of use was a factor conditioning a higher score on all constructs; 2) experience, performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, price value, and habit were influential in behavioral intention to use ChatGPT; 3) facilitating conditions, habit, and behavioral intention were conditioning factors in user behavior. Finally, this report discusses the findings and practical implications of the work and recommends some good uses for ChatGPT.

    Digital competency as a key to the financial inclusion of young people in complex scenarios: A focus groups study

    Young people’s financial and digital literacy have been studied independently and in-depth during the last decades. However, digital financial literacy as a compound concept is novel and still needs to be explored in the scientific literature. This work investigated young people’s perception of their digital financial culture, identified factors that hinder or facilitate it, and explored their preferences in the training modalities for improvement. Twenty-two focus groups were carried out in different Mexican educational institutions based on diversity criteria. The evidence shows that: (1) young people perceive the need for digital financial education linked mainly to the understanding of critical concepts, the use of mobile applications, online financial operations, and digital financial security; (2) some voluntarily exclude themselves from online finance, this being one of the main obstacles in the development of digital financial culture; (3) the digital financial culture gap is accentuated more among young people in public educational institutions and upper secondary education; (4) they have a preference for emerging technological and digital resources for their training in digital finance. These findings make it possible to contextualize training proposals that favor the financial inclusion of young people in complex scenarios brought about by the digital transformation of the economy and society.

    Active learning and education 4.0 for complex thinking training: analysis of two case studies in open education

    This article focuses on empirically analyzing the final products designed by 147 academics from 11 countries who participated in an international open education movement workshop by answering the research questions “What are the technopedagogical components of the products designed by the participants to encourage the open educational movement? and what practice of the open educational movement is being executed?” The article starts with a conceptual basis that describes the concepts of Active learning, Education 4.0, Complex Thinking and Open Education. It presents (1) the case study methodology on which this research is based, (2) two case studies on open education, (3) a game‑based intervention proposal to support instructors in training university students in complex thinking skills based on Education 4.0 technologies and game‑based learning principles, (4) and a discussion of the findings and opportunities for further work in the area. The findings of this study reveal that (A) the use of emerging and 4.0 technologies in initiatives of the open education movement continue to increase; (B) most of the open education initiatives designed by academics participating in the workshops were focused on the production of OER; and (C) inclusive access to education and continuing professional development of teachers is a constant concern addressed in open education initiatives. The results of this research suggest that training and development interventions implying the creation or design of open education initiatives should focus on encouraging all kinds of open education practices (i.e. use, production, dissemination and mobilization)

    Evaluación de la Competencia Digital Docente:instrumentos, resultados y propuestas. Revisión sistemática de la literatura

    La competencia digital docente (CDD) es un reto en la práctica profesional del profesorado y un problema identificado en la investigación al que dar respuestas. En concreto, la evaluación de la CDD es un elemento clave para tomar decisiones respecto a la formación de los docentes y a futuras líneas de investigación. Tomando este reto como foco, el objetivo de este artículo es proporcionar un panorama actualizado sobre las herramientas utilizadas en los procesos de evaluación de la competencia digital de los docentes, indagando en el tipo de diseño de investigación, instrumentos y análisis utilizados, así como los resultados obtenidos tras su aplicación y sus implicaciones. El estudio realizado se aborda desde una revisión sistemática de la literatura, siguiendo las directrices marcadas en la declaración PRISMA, con una muestra de 66 artículos publicados entre 2017 y febrero de 2022 en revistas indexadas en la Web of Science y Scopus, en los que se evalúa la CDD. Los resultados obtenidos muestran niveles medios y bajos de CDD diagnosticados y ofrecen evidencias de la relevancia de la evaluación de la CDD para su mejora. Así mismo evidencian que el marco europeo DIGCOMPEDU y el español propuesto por el INTEF, son seguidos por investigadores de todo el mundo. Sin embargo, es una práctica habitual que los investigadores elaboren su propio instrumento para evaluar la CDD, siendo el cuestionario de autoevaluación el utilizado en la mayor parte de los estudios, al tiempo que se recomienda complementarlo con otras herramientas cualitativas para evaluar el nivel real adquirido. Las conclusiones ponen de manifiesto que los investigadores coinciden en reclamar dos aspectos fundamentales: aumentar la formación docente en competencia digital y avanzar en diseños de investigación que permitan comprobar cómo mejora el nivel CDD a través de propuestas formativas contextualizadas a la etapa educativa o tipo de enseñanza.

    Assessment of digital teaching competence: instruments, results and proposals. Systematic literature review

    Teaching digital competency challenges the professional field of teachers. It also is an identified problem in the research attempting to answer particular questions. Specifically, the evaluation of digital competency in teaching (DCT) is crucial for making decisions regarding teacher training and future lines of research. Taking this challenge as a focus, this article aims to provide an updated overview of the tools used in teachers’ digital competency evaluation processes. Our investigation focused on the research design, indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus, in which the DCT was evaluated. The results showed medium and low levels of diagnosed DCT and offered evidence that assessing DCT improves its effectiveness. Likewise, the results showed that researchers worldwide follow the European DIGCOMPEDU framework and the Spanish framework proposed by INTEF. However, it is common for researchers to develop their instrument to assess DCT with a self-assessment questionnaire in most studies. However, many recommended complementing the DCT with other qualitative tools to assess its actual and perceived levels. The conclusions were that researchers agreed on two fundamental aspects: to increase teacher training in digital competency and to progress in research designs that allow verifying how the DCT level improves through training proposals contextualized in specific educational stages or types of teaching.
