With energy issues, growing electric energy consumption, and energy availability, more energy sources are being explored. Some of these relatively new power sources are wind, solar and hydraulic power. Eolic electric energy generation and hydraulics produce AC current and photovoltaic panels produce DC current, but these cannot be used directly, they must have the appropriate quality first. With them new opportunities arise, as well as problems, such as power conversion due to the different nature of each generation method. This is where power electronics come into place, allowing the control and conversion of electric power. It focuses primarily on photovoltaic systems, where a DC current to AC current conversion is required, explaining the basic system parts, functionality, and configurations. In the following thesis an approach for a controlled converter for a DC power source is proposed, allowing voltage and phase manipulation required in order to synchronize and connect with the utility grid. The approach consists of using the Decoupled Double Synchronous Frame Reference Phase-Locked Loop (DDSRF-PLL) for synchronization and Space Vector Modulation (SVM) for the generation of the appropriate voltage level. These techniques are simplified, simulated for proofing, and implemented on a FPGA, Virtex II PRO Development Board, to ensure system flexibility and enabling easy future modifications. It also includes the necessary additional hardware for the system to be implemented: Voltage sensors, digital to analog converters, power interface, and the controlled converter circuits. Resulting in the combination of both techniques where the output from the DDSRF-PLL is used as an input for the SVM, resulting in a synchronized voltage with the appropriate amplitude. As an additional contribution, a Photovoltaic System’s Economic Feasibility Report (“Factibilidad Económica Para Sistemas Fotovoltaicos”) is included. A simulation software was developed in LabVIEW® for generating and analyzing the necessary data. This tool can be used to size a complete system and calculate the return of investment which can help the end-user make a better decision in the installation of a photovoltaic system array. With the use of this simulation software a set of spreadsheets with an economic analysis for representative cities in Mexico were created.
