Abstract

This thesis illustrates the theoretic framework and the development of a multiplexed potentiostat for individually addressable microelectrode arrays. The initial research covers the study of previous literature research, search for commercially available potentiostat systems, and research about the main electrochemical techniques. The design stage begins showing the electrochemical cell electronic model to continue with the design of an individual potentiostat system using high sensitivity instrumentation amplifier configurations. Then, a multiplexed potentiostat system is developed including filters to eliminate noise and peaks result from switching between the voltage signals. The system will be able to measure currents from 1 pA up to 1.5 µ A, using the cyclic voltammetry technique with scan rates of about 2000 mV/s. The simulations were performed using ICFlow from Mentor Graphics and HIT-Kit 3.7 from Austria Microsystems. Moreover, this thesis discusses some further work in order to enhance the performance of the multiplexed potentiostat.
