Between Aversion and Desire: Two Historical Narratives of El Año Nuevo

During the 19th century, the literary associations and meetings were of considerable relevance, since they congregated the most important writers of the time who shaped the cultural field almost the entire century. The first association with knowledge of its founding role in Mexican literature was the Academia de Letrán, which coincided with the attempt of organizing «Mexico» into a recognizable citizenship. Thus, the lateranistas composed historical narratives with which they influenced the collective imagination of the time. In this article, I analyze Netzula (José María Lacunza) and «La batalla de Otumba» (Eulalio María Ortega), to identify the literary parameters of the rescue of collective past and its influence on the formation of Mexican identity.

Durante el siglo XIX, las asociaciones y tertulias literarias fueron de gran relevancia, ya que en ellas se congregaron los escritores más importantes de la época quienes moldearon el campo cultural por casi toda la centuria. La primera asociación con consciencia de su labor fundadora de las letras mexicanas fue la Academia de Letrán, la cual coincidió con la intención de integrar a «México» dentro de una ciudadanía reconocible. Así, los lateranistas compusieron relatos históricos con los que influyeron en el imaginario colectivo de la época. En este artículo, analizo Netzula (José María Lacunza) y «La batalla de Otumba» (Eulalio María Ortega), con el fin de identificar los parámetros literarios de rescate del pasado colectivo y su influencia en la formación de la identidad mexicana.
