The Resignification of the Myth of Motherhood in “Se habla de Gabriel”, by Rosario Castellanos

The concept of motherhood has remained attached to foundational myths with their notions of relationships between the feminine and fertility, even though at present motherhood has been redefined. The work of Rosario Castellanos (1925-1974) provides an existing vision that was developed in the 1950s and that is noticeable in all her works. Motherhood is a basic pilar of Mexican society (and that of many other patriarchal cultures), which perpetuates models of great inequality. In this work the Mexican writer’s individual and intimate concept of motherhood is briefly analyzed in both the poem Se habla de Gabriel (1972) as well as in essays that suggest the deconstruction of the maternal instinct and the construction of a free motherhood, a product of the exercise of the conscious will.

El concepto de maternidad se ha mantenido apegado a los mitos fundacionales con sus nociones de relación entre lo femenino y la fertilidad, pese a que, en la actualidad la maternidad se ha resignificado. La obra de Rosario Castellanos (1925-1974) brinda una visión vigente que se comenzó a fraguar en la década de los 50 y que es perceptible en su obra entera. La maternidad es el pilar básico de la sociedad mexicana (y de muchas otras culturas patriarcales), que perpetúa modelos de gran desigualdad. En este trabajo se analiza brevemente el concepto propio e íntimo de la maternidad de la escritora mexicana, en el poema Se habla de Gabriel (1972) así como en ensayos que sugieren la deconstrucción del instinto maternal y la construcción de una maternidad libre producto del ejercicio de la voluntad consciente.
