The Hunchback Dwarf who Does not Smoke (or the Benjaminian ‘Theology’ against the Opium of Progress). Reflections on the First Thesis about History

This article contains reflections on the relationship between philosophy and  theology (between historical materialism and redemption) in the “Theses on the Philosophy of History” by Walter Benjamin, specifically about the chessplayer automaton allegory in the first thesis. The ideology of progress is presented as the “opium” of historical materialism.

En el presente artículo se trata de indagar en la relación entre filosofía y teología (entre materialismo histórico y redención) en las “Tesis sobre el concepto de historia” de Walter Benjamin a partir de la alegoría del autómata ajedrecista que protagoniza la primera de las tesis. Se sugiere a la ideología del progreso como “opio” del materialismo histórico.
